Hullabaloo is an orchestra with up to a dozen musicians. Instruments played include brass, woodwind, guitars, a violin, a double bass, piano, electronic keyboard and percussion. They are interested in musical innovation. In practice this means that they play exactly what they like but within a framework conducted by their leader Tim Hill. They are interested in doing interpretations of animations I have created. On 9 January 2020 they provided music at an exhibition preview at the Innovation Centre in Taunton UK responding to animations I had done. Tim conducted them whilst looking at the animations. They could not see them. A video of the event and one of the animations is shown here.
A separate performances of one or more of my animations by Hullabaloo is planned for later this year. One of these might form part of the planned Multi-media event described above. I need to greatly improve my animations to allow this to happen. Events that individual musicians need to respond to need to be much longer. The rhythm imposed by the pattern caused by change from one frame to another needs to be less intrusive. In practice this means that each animation needs to be much longer. They can no longer be a simple flow of shapes on colours. Things need to happen. An adventure is required. Somehow the animation itself must be able to engage with the musicians emotionally and the audience needs to have experienced something altogether special and memorable. I am exploring technical devices including possible use of more modern software. On 25 February, I am starting a creative writing course to help me with this.
